A surprise in the yard

A roadrunner! I entered the drive at a crawl so he wouldn’t leave abruptly and the first photos are from the car.

I managed to be non threatening enough to get a good shot with my little Nikon CoolPix. 20140215-153418.jpg

I love the crest. It would pop up like a thought, then flatten. He was about two feet from beak to tail end, which is pretty typical. I see them disappearing in bushes on the roadside and one once raced across the yard. Never have been this up close and personal. (Roadrunners can sprint at about 18 mph, are a member of the cuckoo, can fly, but prefer the ground and kill and eat rattlesnakes.)

I thanked him for the visit and he crossed the yard to the road. Didn’t see Wiley anywhere…

  1. Wow, good shot! When I was vacationing in the Four Corners some years ago, I really wanted to see a roadrunner but I was told they’re pretty scarce. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the visit. Comments are always read, appreciated and responded to..
